Dr. Alexander Henry Jones attended Central High School in Ohio, and graduated from Wilberforce. He received a bachelor of Divinity from Yale University and later, a doctorate in Theology from Drew University, making him the first African American to earn such a degree from that university. He later received a degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Jones served as principal of Dunbar High School in Metropolis, Illinois and later, dean of Western University. He taught at Wilberforce, Tuskegee, and Morris Brown Universities. He also served as dean of Campbell College. He pastored churches in Haddonfield, New Jersey, First A.M.E. in Kansas City, several churches in Pennsylvania including Temple A.M.E., Bethel Bryn Mawr, Bethel West Chester and Mt. Zion Norristown, and Amityville A.M.E. in Long Island, New York. He published several articles, and is listed in Religious Leaders of America, Vol. 11-1941-42. Additionally, he contributed to numerous anthologies by Avon House Publishers, and was a member of the 8th Illinois Regiment Company M.
 

Dr. Jones was married to Eddie Lee Johnson who bore him two sons: Alexander Jr. and James Jamon. Dr. Alexander Henry Jones passed away in 1954 and is buried at Rolling Green Cemetery in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Dr. Jones' granddaughter, Rev. Stacey Jones-Anderson, is the only known and living descendent of the Bishop who still maintains active affiliation with the A.M.E. Church. She is a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Devon, PA.
