"Josh" as he was called, was born in Orangeburg, SC. He attended Ohio State and Yale Universities, and later graduated from Brown University in 1903. He married his college sweetheart, Helen Regina Dennimie, a sculptress and Canadian immigrant who came to the United States in 1896. The two met in Troy, NY. They had two children, Helen Ruth and Joshua "George". Throughout his life, Josh served in various capacities as a journalist. The following work history was gleaned from a 1934 Brown University publication: Journalist, Providence, 1903-1907; Worcester Evening Post, 1907-1908; Lawrence Sun, 1908-1910; City Editor, Boston Post, 1915-1917; war work, General Electric Company, 1917-1919; City Editor, Boston Telegram, 1920-1922; Secretary to Mayor James M.Curley of Boston, 1922-1930 and City Editor, City Record, 73 City Hall, Boston, MA. Josh wrote the words for Boston's official song, "Dear Old Boston" and was acclaimed as Boston's poet laureate.

He authored a number of books and poems. His most notable written works include By Sanction of Law (1924), which details the interracial romance of an African American man and a White woman, a work considered to be loosely based on his life; a poem entitled "To A Skull" published in The Book of American Negro Poetry by James Weldon Johnson (1922); Poems of the Four Seas, and Heart of the World. His wife Helen passed away in Boston, MA on November 8, 1947, and is interred at Mt. Benedict Cemetery in that city. Josh passed away December 14, 1955 in Boston, and is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, MA.

Helen Ruth graduated from Boston Latin High School at age 15, and was an accomplished musician. She married Henry W. Moretti, and they had one son, Wilfred Henry. Helen Ruth was later married to Earle C. Wolfe of Pennsylvania. They were the parents of six children. She passed away in Chester, PA of cancer at the age of 37. George was married to Ann Selig, but they had no children. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Boiler Maker and was awarded The Purple Heart during World War II.
